Sail Boats & Yachts
The sail boat or yacht
is unique in that you can have so many add-ons, for example
special sail inventories for cruising and
racing in heavy weather or light wind. A sail boat or yacht
can have a
massive amount of marine hardware such as optional winches,
furling gear, bronze oarlocks, or even
a 16 foot peopod with a furled spritsail.
Blue water sail boats
may have power winches and electric or hydraulic anchor
windlasses. The sail boat
may have an engine room full of machinery and boat systems that
are often crowded into a very
limited space, which can make an inspection by a marine surveyor
very challenging.
In the later
case, the relocation of some of the equipment should be
considered. For example the batteries are often in the
engine room and can be placed in another area, as it not a good
idea to have
them in the engine room in the first place. The engine room
is not a good place to store spare parts, a holding tank, or
water heater, if these items can be placed somewhere else. A repair or routine
maintenance under adverse
weather conditions is always a possibility.
There should be
frequent inspections of the sail inventory and the sails should
never be stored in a wet condition, as salt water
residue hold moisture and contributes to mold and mildew. When hauling out
a
sail boat or yacht, be sure to have visible marking for the
straps on a travel lift or for blocking on the ways.
Helpful Hint:
when hauling a boat on a marine travel lift, it always
beneficial to know the hanging weigh. There are
normally 2 scales measuring the weight: one forward and one
aft.
