Restoration
Older boat and yachts have unique structure
properties that require particular building
techniques. A
fastidious inspection by a skilled marine surveyor is the first
step to facilitate restoration repairs and
refitting. All gear and hardware should be removed from the
boat or yacht.
In
the Classic Yacht Association we have very often found it
necessary in restoration to remove all or a major
part of the paint or coatings before a warrantable repair can be
achieved. Chemical strippers
create horrendous environmental problems. The pricing of
hauling the materials to a certified
dumpsite can range up to $700 a drum and prices are expected to
go higher.
We have
found in over 35 years of surveying and the restoration of boats
and yachts that there are two (2) very
environmental, compatible, and safe ways of blasting a hull and
interior. The first one is by means of
powder blast with baking soda and the second one is blasting with
dry ice. Only a certified
technician under the guidance of a marine surveyor should perform
these two (2) removal practices.
Steel and
aluminum boats have to audio gauged and immediately primed, after
being blasted. Chose a
boatyard that specializes in yacht restoration, even if it
requires the relocation of your boat. The hauling and
blocking of the yacht on the hard for close inspection requires
the expertise of a highly
qualified haul-out yard under the direction of a marine
surveyor.
It is
always better to have a boatyard involved in marine restoration,
repair and the relocation of equipment, as
they have cranes to safely remove the heavy items. The
boatyard can also transport equipment,
machinery, electronics, hardware, and sail inventories to the
certified repair facilities
